A rotary cannon is a large gun with many barrels.

These barrels spin in a circle while the gun fires. This spinning design helps the gun work much faster than a single-barrel gun. It also helps the gun stay cool.

In a single gun, the parts must wait for each other. In a rotary cannon, the parts work at the same time. One barrel fires a shot. Then, a different barrel loads a new round. Another barrel throws out the empty casing. This set of steps happens in different barrels as they rotate.

Most modern guns use an electric motor to spin the barrels. Some use gas from the shots to move them. Because they are very heavy, these guns stay on ships or planes.

One famous example is the M61 Vulcan. It is a six-barrel gun used on planes. It can fire up to 6,600 rounds per minute. Another big gun is the GAU-8 Avenger. It has seven barrels and is used on the A-10 plane.
