It happens when things grow in size very quickly. This creates high heat and high pressure.

Explosions can happen in many ways. Some happen because things are stuck. Pressure builds up inside a container. When the container breaks, the matter rushes out. A volcano does this. Magma rises from below. The gas inside the magma bubbles out. This makes the magma grow in size very fast. The pressure builds until the volcano erupts.

Other explosions happen in space. Some stars end their lives in a supernova. A supernova is a massive star explosion.

Solar flares are smaller explosions on the Sun.

Humans make explosions too. We use chemical explosives like dynamite. These use a fast change to make hot gas. We also use nuclear fission. This is a way to get power from the center of an atom. These are much stronger than chemical tools.

Explosions can also throw small bits. We call these fragments. These pieces can fly for hundreds of meters. They can hit cars or buildings.
