Liquids can turn into gas. This is called vaporization.

There are two main ways this happens. The first way is evaporation. This happens on the surface of the liquid. It can happen at temperatures below the boiling point.

The second way is boiling. Boiling is different because it involves the whole liquid. It makes bubbles of gas under the surface. Boiling happens when the vapor pressure is high. This pressure must match or beat the air pressure. The temperature where this happens is the boiling point. This point can change based on the air pressure around it.

Sometimes, a solid turns straight into a gas. This skips the liquid stage. We call this sublimation.

In very big explosions, things can vaporize too. Intense heat or force can break objects apart. This can turn matter into a gas of nuclei and electrons. This state is called a plasma. This happens when many high-energy particles strike matter very fast. The molecules lose their bonds and fly apart.
