Most machines use one of two ways to work. They use gravity or they use pressure.

In a drip machine, water moves by gravity. First, someone puts coffee grounds into a filter. This filter can be made of paper or metal. Then, cold water is poured into a chamber. The machine boils the water. The hot water moves into a funnel. It drips through the grounds and into a pot.

Melitta Bentz made the first non-electric drip maker in 1908. She used notebook paper for the filter.

Other machines use pressure to push water through the grounds. These are called espresso makers. They make espresso coffee.

A cafetière is another type of maker. Some people call it a French press.

It uses a mesh filter instead of paper. This helps the drink keep more oils and flavor. You can change the strength by using more or less coffee. If the grounds stay in the drink, it may taste bitter.
