It uses steam and water to make food cook fast. In the 1600s, a scientist named Denis Papin made a tool called a steam digester. It was the first version of a pressure cooker.

How does it work? When water boils in a sealed pot, it makes steam. This steam gets trapped inside. The trapped steam raises the pressure. High pressure makes the water much hotter than normal. This extra heat cooks food in a very short time. It can even help people cook high in the mountains. At high places, water does not get hot enough to cook food well.

Modern cookers have many safety parts. They have locks so you cannot open them while they are under pressure. Some new cookers are electric. These are called third-generation pressure cookers. They use digital timers to help you cook. Some even work as air fryers.
