A kettle is a tool used to boil water.

Most kettles have a lid, a handle, and a spout. Some kettles sit on a stove. These use heat from a cooktop. They are often made of metal like stainless steel.

Other kettles use a plug for power. We call these electric kettles. They have a heating element inside. This is a part that gets hot to boil the water. Early electric kettles were not very good. The heating part was in a separate space under the water. In 1922, an engineer made a better part. This part could sit directly in the water. This made the kettle work much better.

Modern electric kettles are very smart. They can turn off by themselves. This happens when the water boils. This stops the water from boiling away. Some kettles have a whistle on the spout. When steam passes through the whistle, it vibrates. This makes a loud sound to tell you the water is ready.
