To make water hot, we must move heat into it. This is called heat transfer. We can use many things to get this heat. Some machines use fossil fuels like natural gas or oil.

Others use electricity. Some even use power from the sun.

There are two main ways to heat water at home. The first way uses a storage water heater. This is a big tank that keeps water hot.

These tanks can hold 75 to 400 liters of water. They are great because they keep heat ready for later. However, heat can leak out of the tank walls over time.

The second way uses a tankless water heater. These are also called instantaneous heaters. They do not hold much water inside. Instead, they heat water right as it flows through the device.

This gives you a steady flow of hot water. You can also use solar energy. Solar collectors on a roof catch heat from the sun to warm the water.
