Cogeneration

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Most power plants make electricity. They also make a lot of heat. Usually, that heat is wasted.

Cogeneration

Cogeneration is a way to use both. It is also called combined heat and power. This means the plant makes power and useful heat at the same time. This is a smart way to use fuel. It makes the process more efficient. Efficiency means getting more work out of the fuel.

How does it work?

High heat first drives a turbine. A turbine is a machine with blades that spins. This spinning makes electricity. The leftover heat is then used for other things. It can warm up water or buildings. Some plants use this heat for cooling, too. This is called trigeneration.

In trigeneration, the heat helps run a machine that makes cold air.

Many places use these plants. Some warm up whole towns. Others help big factories. Some plants even use wood or straw for fuel.

This helps reduce waste. It is a great way to use every bit of power we make.
