They work by using heat to make steam. This steam turns a large wheel called a turbine. The turbine is linked to a generator. This machine turns the spinning motion into power.

The heat comes from a metal called uranium. Inside the plant, a part called a reactor core uses uranium. In the core, a process called fission happens. This is when tiny parts of the metal split apart. This splitting makes a lot of heat. A liquid, called a coolant, carries this heat away. The heat turns water into steam. This steam then pushes the turbine to make power.

Most plants use uranium-235 as fuel. This type of uranium splits easily. This makes it great for making energy. After a few years, the fuel must be changed. The old fuel is called waste. It stays hot and radioactive for a long time. It is kept in special pools to cool down.

These plants help keep the air clean. They do not release much carbon. This makes them similar to wind and solar power. They are a safe way to make electricity.
