Cogeneration

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Cogeneration is a clever way to use energy. It is also called combined heat and power, or CHP. Most power plants only make electricity. During that process, they create a lot of extra heat. Usually, that heat is just wasted.

Cogeneration changes that by using the heat for something useful. This makes the use of fuel much more efficient. Efficiency means getting more work out of the same amount of fuel. This method is very important for saving energy.

How does this system actually work?

It usually starts with a heat engine or a power station. High-temperature heat first drives a turbine. A turbine is a machine with blades that spins to create electricity. After the turbine spins, some heat is left over. This is called low-temperature waste heat. Instead of letting it go to waste, the plant captures it. This heat can then be used to warm up water or spaces.

Some systems even use this heat for cooling through a process called trigeneration.

People have used these ideas for a long time. In the early days of electricity, industries made their own power. They used exhaust steam to heat their machines. Large hotels, stores, and apartment buildings also did this. They made their own power and used the leftover steam for heat. This continued for many years because buying power from big companies was very expensive. Today, we use much more advanced machines to do the same job.

There are many different types of CHP plants today.

Some large plants use natural gas to run gas turbines. Other plants use engines, like the ones in cars, to make power. Some even use biomass, which is fuel from living things like wood or straw. For example, the Masnedø station in Denmark burns straw. The Metz plant in France uses waste wood to provide heat for 30,000 homes.

Some modern combined cycle plants can reach an efficiency above 80 percent.

You can see how this works in your own life. Think about a car engine during the winter. As the engine runs, it gets very hot. That heat is used to keep the inside of the car warm. This is just like a small version of cogeneration.

In big cities, many homes connect to district heating systems. These systems carry heat through insulated pipes to warm up whole neighborhoods. It is a great way to make sure no energy is lost.
