A shotgun is a long-barreled firearm designed for specific tasks. It shoots a special cartridge known as a shotshell. This shell can discharge many tiny metal balls called shot. It can also fire one single solid piece called a slug.

Most shotguns are smoothbore firearms. This means the inside of the barrel is smooth without any grooves. This design allows the pellets to fly out with less resistance.

Because the pellets spread out, the gun is great for hitting moving targets. This makes it useful for many different jobs in the world.

When a shotgun fires, it works in a very interesting way. The pellets inside the shell are pushed by a piece of wadding. This wadding helps move the shot through the barrel. As the shot leaves the end of the barrel, it begins to scatter.

Many barrels are "choked" at the muzzle end. A choke is a way to control how much the shot spreads out. This means a single shot produces a cluster of many impact points. Because the energy is divided among many pellets, each one has less power to penetrate deep objects.

Shotguns have a very long history of use. In the 16th century, fowling pieces first appeared in Europe. These were used to hunt birds. By the 17th century, some barrels were as long as 6 feet.

The term "shotgun" was first recorded in 1776 in Kentucky. During the 19th century, cavalry troops used them because they were easy to use while moving. In the American Old West, they were a symbol of protection. Express messengers even rode with them to guard strongboxes on trains.

Many inventors helped shape the modern shotgun we see today. Daniel Myron LeFever introduced the first American hammerless shotgun in 1878. Later, John Browning changed how shotguns worked. In 1893, he introduced the pump action design.

He also patented the Browning Auto-5 in 1900. This was America's first semi-automatic shotgun. During World War I, American forces used the Winchester Model 1897 pump-action shotgun. They used these guns effectively during trench fighting on the Western Front.

Today, people use shotguns for many different activities. Many enjoy target-shooting sports like skeet or trap. In these sports, people shoot at flying disks called "clay pigeons."

Hunters also use them to catch fast-flying birds or small game. In modern conflicts, shotguns have even been used to shoot down drones. This works well because the spreading pellets make it easier to hit fast targets. Whether for sport or work, the shotgun remains a very unique tool.
