Shot is a name for many small metal spheres or pellets. Most of these are made from a heavy metal called lead.

People have used these small projectiles from slings since ancient times. Today, they are mostly used in shotguns and grenade launchers. Some shot is even made for handguns in styles called birdshot or snake shot. Beyond tools for shooting, lead shot is used for many other jobs. It can act as a heavy weight to balance things or fill empty spaces.

Making round shot is a very interesting thing that happens. In the old days, people used a shot tower to make them. They would pour hot, liquid lead from the very top of a tall tower. As the lead falls, surface tension pulls the liquid into a round shape. If the tower is tall enough, the drops turn into solid metal before they hit the bottom. Usually, a pool of water sits at the base to cool the lead fast.

A man named William Watts helped make this process better. He lived in Bristol and worked on this in the late 1700s. He even used his own house to help make the shot. He added a three-storey tower and dug a shaft into the caves below. He received a patent for this work in 1782. Later, a different way called the Bliemeister method became more common. This method was named after Louis W. Bliemeister from Los Angeles. It has been used since the early 1960s to make very small shot.

There are many different sizes of shot to choose from. The numbers for the sizes can be a bit tricky to learn. As the number gets higher, the actual size of the shot gets smaller. For example, #9 shot is much smaller than #6 shot. Large shot is called buckshot and is used for bigger animals like deer. This type of shot can range from size #B to Tri-Ball. Different sizes are used depending on how far someone needs to shoot.

We must be very careful with lead because it can be harmful. In the 1880s, people first saw lead poisoning in birds in the United States. Many waterfowl, like swans, can swallow shot by mistake while they eat.

Once the lead is inside, stomach acids break it down. This can make the birds very sick or even cause them to die. Even a small amount can make it hard for birds to fly long distances. It is important to understand how this metal works and how to use it safely.
