Most modern crayons are made from paraffin wax. This wax is heated and then cooled to the right temperature. During this process, it is dyed with bright colors.

These tools are very easy to use for many people. They are less messy than paints or markers. Because they are blunt, they do not have sharp points like pencils. This makes them great for teaching small children how to draw. Professional artists also use them for their work.

Making crayons involves a specific way of working with materials. To make them, workers heat the paraffin wax. They add pigment to the wax to create different colors. Once the wax is ready, it is manufactured into sticks.

Some art tools are similar but use different things. For example, pastels use a dry binder like gum arabic. Oil pastels use a mix of wax and oil. These differences change how the color feels on the paper.

People have used wax and color for thousands of years. This old method is called encaustic painting.

In this style, artists mix hot beeswax with colored pigment. They use heat to "burn in" the image onto stone. Ancient Egyptians, Romans, and Greeks used this technique. Indigenous people in the Philippines also used it. Later, in the late 1790s, artists in Paris used Conté crayons. These were a mix between a pastel and a regular crayon.

Many famous companies helped make the crayons we use today. In the late 1880s, Charles A. Bowley made wax sticks for marking leather. He eventually shaped them into cylinders like pencils. In 1902, Edwin Binney and C. Harold Smith started making marking crayons.

In 1903, Alice Stead Binney named the famous Crayola brand. She combined the French word for chalk, "craie," with part of the word for wax. Their first box had eight colors and was very popular. It even appeared on a postage stamp in 1905.

Crayons connect us to many different types of art. Early French artists like François Clouet used them for portraits.

Sister Gertrude Morgan used simple crayon drawings to tell Bible stories. Today, you can find many kinds of crayons in stores. Some brands are made by companies like Rose Art or Dixon Ticonderoga. You can also find generic brands in supermarkets. Whether for a child or an artist, crayons remain a favorite way to create.
