Gouache is a special kind of paint that artists love to use.

It is a water-based paint that is very opaque. This means the color is thick and hides what is underneath. It is different from watercolor, which is thin and clear. Many people call it body color because it has a heavy feel. Artists use it to create bright and solid layers of color. It can be used for many different kinds of art projects.

Making gouache involves mixing a few simple things together. It uses natural pigment to create the color. A binder, like gum arabic or dextrin, holds the pigment together. Sometimes artists add a white filler like chalk to add more body. This makes the paint heavier and helps it reflect light.

You usually mix the paint with water to get the right thickness. When it dries, it has a flat, matte finish. You must be careful because colors often change as they dry. Lighter colors usually turn darker once the water is gone. Dark colors often dry to look a bit lighter.

This way of painting has a very long history. People have used gouache for at least twelve centuries. Ancient Egyptian painters used a version of it long ago. Artists in India used it for Buddhist manuscripts. It was also used to make beautiful Persian and Mughal miniatures. The word gouache comes from an Italian word for "mud." In the 16th century, it described painting oil over a base. By the 18th century in France, it meant opaque water media.

Many different tools and methods make gouache useful. In the 1800s, tubes were invented to hold paint easily. This helped artists use gouache alongside watercolor and ink. In the 20th century, it was used for animation on clear sheets. Commercial artists use it today for posters, comics, and design work. You can apply it with a brush or an airbrush. Some artists even paint on unusual things like cardboard. The artist Vienna Parreno has even painted on Braille paper. Henri Matisse used a style called cut collages with it.

Today, you can find many different versions of this paint. Most children's paints use a cheap binder called dextrin. There is also a newer version called acrylic gouache. This version uses an acrylic binder instead of gum arabic. It is still easy to use with water when it is wet. However, it becomes water-resistant once it is completely dry. This makes it a very helpful tool for modern artists. It stays matte and opaque just like the traditional kind.
