A fountain pen is a special tool used for writing.

It uses a metal tip called a nib to put ink on paper. Most fountain pens use ink that is mixed with water. Unlike old dip pens, a fountain pen has a reservoir inside. This reservoir holds the ink so you do not have to dip the pen into an inkwell constantly.

This makes writing much easier and faster for everyone.

How does the ink move from the inside to the paper? First, the pen draws ink from the reservoir through a part called a feed. The feed helps the ink reach the metal nib. The ink moves using gravity and something called capillary action. Capillary action is when a liquid flows through very small spaces.

You can fill the reservoir in several ways. Some people use a dropper or a syringe. Other pens use a piston mechanism, which is a moving part that creates suction to pull ink in. Some pens even use small, pre-filled ink cartridges.

People have been trying to make these pens for a long time. In Arab Egypt, the Fatimid caliph Al-Mu'izz li-Din Allah wanted a pen that would not stain his clothes. He was given a pen with a reservoir that would not leak even if held upside-down.

The artist Leonardo da Vinci also had ideas for these pens. His journals show drawings of pens that use gravity and capillary action. While his actual pens did not survive, an artist named Amerigo Bombara built models of them in 2011. These models are now kept in museums.

Many inventors helped make the fountain pen what it is today. Petrache Poenaru received a French patent in 1827 for a pen made from a swan quill.

In the 1830s, makers in Birmingham, England, began mass-producing steel nibs. This helped many people afford pens and learn to read. Later, three big things made pens very popular. These were gold nibs tipped with iridium, hard rubber, and ink that flows easily.

In the early 1900s, famous brands like Waterman and Parker became very successful.

Fountain pens changed how we share ideas through writing. Before they were perfect, pens often leaked or were messy to fill.

Inventors solved this by making "safety" pens with tips that could retract. They also made better caps to stop leaks. Even though ballpoint pens are now used for quick notes, many people still love fountain pens.
