A pen is a common tool used for writing or drawing. It works by applying ink to a surface like paper.

While we use them every day, pens have changed a lot over time. Early pens were very different from the ones in your backpack. They could not hold much ink at all. You had to dip the tip into an inkwell often to keep writing. Today, most pens have an internal reservoir. This is a space inside that holds plenty of ink for you.

Many different tools have served as pens throughout history. Ancient Egyptians used reed pens made from sea rush.

These were used to write on papyrus scrolls. Later, people used quill pens made from bird feathers. Quills were great for writing on smooth animal skins called vellum or parchment. The Dead Sea Scrolls were written with quills around 100 BC. In the Roman Empire, people even used metal pens. Some of these were made of copper alloy.

Inventors worked hard to make pens better and cleaner. In 953, a leader in Egypt wanted a pen that would not stain his clothes. He was given a pen that held ink in a reservoir. Later, in 1636, Daniel Schwenter described a pen made from two quills. One quill acted as a reservoir to hold the ink. In 1827, Petrache Poenaru patented a fountain pen that used a quill for its reservoir.

These ideas helped lead to the pens we use now.

Modern pens work in several clever ways. A ballpoint pen uses a tiny, hard ball in its tip.

This ball sits in a socket and rotates as you move the pen. It picks up thick, oil-based ink and leaves it on the paper. This ink dries almost instantly. A gel pen works similarly but uses a thick, water-based gel. This allows for many bright colors, like neon or glitter.

A rollerball pen uses liquid ink for a smoother line. A fountain pen uses gravity to move liquid ink through a metal nib.

Even with computers, the pen is still a main way to write. Some people even collect expensive, luxury pens as status symbols.

We can see how these tools connect to our daily lives. You might use a felt-tip pen to color a picture. You might use a ballpoint pen to do your homework. From ancient reeds to tiny rolling balls, the pen has come a long way. It is a simple tool that helps us share our ideas with the world.
