A pen is a tool used to write or draw. It works by putting ink onto a surface like paper.

Long ago, people used different tools. Ancient Egyptians used thin reed pens made from sea rush.

Later, people used quill pens. These were made from bird feathers. Quills were great for writing on smooth animal skins. In the Roman Empire, people even used metal pens.

Old pens had to be dipped in ink often. They held only a little ink at a time. Modern pens are different. They have an internal reservoir. This is a part that holds ink inside. This means you do not have to dip them.

A ballpoint pen uses a tiny ball in its tip.

The ball sits in a small socket. As you move the pen, the ball rolls. It picks up ink from the reservoir. Then, it leaves the ink on the paper. This ink is thick and dries very fast.

Other pens use different ways to work. A gel pen uses a thick, water-based gel. This makes colors look very bright.

A fountain pen uses liquid ink. The ink flows through a metal nib, which is a flat writing tip. Gravity helps the ink move from the reservoir to the tip.
