It is very helpful for builders. It works on flat or bumpy surfaces. You can even use it on walls with holes.

To use it, you first coat a string with powder. This powder is usually chalk. You lay the string across a surface. Then you pull the string very tight. Next, you snap the string sharply. This makes the string hit the surface. The chalk then moves from the string to the surface. This leaves a straight line behind.

People have used this tool for a long time. It was used in ancient Egypt. In East Asia, workers use an ink line instead. This uses a silk cord and ink. In Japan, they call this tool a sumitsubo.

A master craftsman named Lu Ban invented the ink reel. These tools are often very pretty. Owners may prize them highly. Builders sometimes give these tools as gifts during a big ceremony. This happens when a new building is finished.
