It has a dark core inside. This core is made of graphite and clay. Graphite is a soft material. When you rub the core on paper, it leaves a trail. This happens because of friction. The core rubs off onto the paper.

Most pencils have a wood casing. This shell protects the core. It also keeps your hands clean. Most casings are made of thin wood. Some are round or have flat sides.

Long ago, people found pure graphite in England. They thought it was a type of lead. This is why we still call the core "lead" today. But pencils do not actually use lead. In 1795, Nicolas-Jacques Conté found a new way to make them. He mixed graphite powder with clay. Then, he heated the mix in a kiln. This helped make the core harder or softer.

Today, many pencils use incense cedar wood. Some people even use mechanical pencils. These have metal or plastic shells. You can push the core out when you need it.
