The history of the pencil is tied to the discovery of pure graphite. Before modern pencils, artists used camel hair brushes or metal styluses. In 1565, a massive deposit of extremely pure, solid graphite was found in Borrowdale, England.

Because chemistry was still developing, people mistook this substance for lead. They called it plumbago, which is Latin for "lead ore." This error persists today, as many people still refer to the graphite core as "lead." This graphite was so valuable for lining cannonball moulds that the English Crown guarded the mines. Early graphite sticks were simply wrapped in string or sheepskin for stability.

Manufacturing methods evolved to create the modern wooden pencil. Around 1560, Simonio and Lyndiana Bernacotti created early blueprints for wood-encased pencils. They initially hollowed out juniper wood sticks. Later, a superior method emerged where two wooden halves were carved and glued around a graphite stick.

A major breakthrough occurred in 1795 when Nicolas-Jacques Conté developed a way to use powdered graphite. He mixed the powder with clay and fired the rods in a kiln. By varying the ratio of graphite to clay, manufacturers could control the hardness of the lead. This method remains the standard for pencil production today.

In the United States, pencil production grew through various innovations. William Munroe made the first American wood pencils in 1812. Later, Ebenezer Wood helped automate the process using the first circular saw in pencil production. He created the hexagonal and octagonal shapes we recognize today.

Joseph Dixon later developed methods for mass production. By 1870, his company became a massive global consumer of graphite. The industry grew rapidly; by the end of the 19th century, Americans were using 240,000 pencils every day.

Material science also dictates the casing of the pencil. Red Cedar was once the favored timber because it is aromatic and resists splintering. As supplies dwindled, manufacturers turned to incense cedar, which is often dyed to look like Red Cedar.

Other woods like basswood, alder, or the Southeast Asian Jelutong are also used. Modern pencils have reached a massive scale of production. Currently, over 14 billion pencils are manufactured worldwide every year.

Technology has also introduced different ways to hold and use the core. Mechanical pencils feature elaborate casings that are not bonded to the core. Instead, they support mobile pigment cores that can be extended or retracted through the tip.
