A quill is a writing tool made from a bird feather.

Most quills come from large flight feathers. These feathers are hollow. This makes them perfect for pens.

To make a quill, people must prepare the feather. They cure the shaft to make it hard. Then, they use a small knife to shape the tip. This tip is called a nib. A nib is the sharp part that touches the paper. The hollow part of the feather is called the calamus. This part holds the ink. The ink moves to the tip through a tiny slit. This happens by capillary action. This is a way that liquid moves through small spaces.

People have used quills for a very long time. They were used to write the Magna Carta. They also wrote the Declaration of Independence. Goose feathers are the most common choice. Swan feathers are also used for large letters. Crow feathers are good for fine work. Today, some people still use quills. Professional scribes and calligraphers use them to make beautiful art.
