Pneumatics is a way to use gas to create motion in machines.

Most systems use compressed air to power different devices. A central compressor uses electricity to squeeze the air tight. This squeezed air then moves parts like cylinders or motors.

These systems are often safer or cheaper than using electric motors. They are also a good choice instead of hydraulic systems. You can find pneumatics used in dentistry, mining, and construction.

To make a pneumatic system work, the air must be prepared first. A compressor takes air from the atmosphere and squeezes it. Usually, moisture is removed from this air to keep things clean. A little bit of oil is added to help parts move smoothly. This oil also stops the metal from rusting. The air then travels through pipes to reach the tools. It can move through valves that are controlled by hand or by electricity.

Humans have used air power for a very long time. Early groups used blowguns as one of the first pneumatic tools. Bellows were also used to squeeze air for forging metal. A man named Ctesibius of Alexandria lived in the 3rd century BCE. He is often called the father of pneumatics. He invented mechanical toys that worked using air and water. Later, the mathematician Hero of Alexandria wrote about many different air contraptions.

Many famous scientists studied how air and pressure work. The German physicist Otto von Guericke lived from 1602 to 1686. He invented the vacuum pump to pull air out of containers. He used air pressure to show how copper hemispheres could stick together. In modern factories, most systems use air because it is easy to find. Nitrogen is another gas used, but it can be a hazard if breathed. Carbon dioxide is also used for small tools because it is easy to carry.

It is helpful to compare pneumatics to hydraulics. Both systems use fluids to move heavy things. Hydraulics use liquids like oil, while pneumatics use gases like air. Air is easy to squeeze, which helps machines absorb sudden shocks. Liquids are much harder to squeeze, which allows hydraulics to move much heavier loads. Pneumatic tools are simple to design and very reliable. You can see them in action on bus brakes and dental drills.
