Respirator

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A respirator is a special type of mask. It helps people breathe safely in dangerous places.

These masks protect the wearer from breathing in harmful things. This includes lead fumes, vapors, and gases. They also block particulate matter, which is tiny bits of dust. They can even stop airborne pathogens like viruses.

There are two main ways these masks work to keep us safe.

One way is called an air-purifying respirator. This type cleans the air by using a filter. The mask draws in the dirty air and pulls it through the filter. This process removes the bad particles or gases before you breathe.

Another way is using an air-supplied respirator. This mask does not clean the air around you. Instead, it gives you a fresh supply of breathable air from a different source. This is often used in very dangerous or tight spaces.

People have used protective masks for a very long time. In the first century, Pliny the Elder described workers using animal bladder skins. These skins protected them from red lead oxide dust in Roman mines.

In 1836, Julius Jeffreys first used the word "respirator" for a mask. Later, John Stenhouse studied how charcoal could capture toxic gases.

His work helped make activated charcoal a common filter. In 1871, John Tyndall made a "fireman's respirator" using cotton and charcoal. He showed this special hood to the Royal Society in London in 1874.

Many different kinds of respirators exist today. Some are single-use masks that you throw away after one use.

Others are reusable models called elastomeric respirators. These have cartridges that you can replace. There are also powered air-purifying respirators, or PAPRs. These use a fan or pump to move air through a filter.

In the 1970s, the first single-use respirator was made by 3M. It used a special way to blow melt material to make the filter.

Respirators are used in many jobs every day. Doctors use them to block germs when helping patients.

People in mining, construction, and farming use them too. They also help firefighters and police officers stay safe. To work well, the mask must fit the face perfectly.

Users must perform a seal check. This ensures no bad air leaks in through the edges. If the mask does not seal, it will not protect you correctly.
