A gas mask is a piece of protective equipment. It helps people avoid breathing in bad things from the air. These bad things can be toxic gases or tiny particles. The mask creates a tight seal over the nose and mouth.

Some masks also cover the eyes to protect them. This is important because some chemicals can hurt the eyes. A mask only protects you from breathing or touching chemicals with your eyes.

Most masks work using a process called adsorption. This is when particles stick to a surface. The mask uses a filter to catch harmful materials. Many filters use activated carbon to do this work.

Some filters can last for 8 hours in bad situations. Other special filters can last up to 20 hours. The mask might have a small container screwed onto it. Other masks use a large container connected by a hose.

People have tried to make breathing tools for a long time. Ancient Greeks used simple sponges to help them breathe. In 1785, Jean-François Pilâtre de Rozier invented a respirator. In 1847, Lewis P. Haslett made a device to filter dust. He received a patent for his "Lung Protector" in 1849.

Later, Garrett Morgan patented a safety hood in 1914. This hood used hoses to reach safer air near the floor. These early ideas helped lead to the masks we see today.

World War I changed how masks were made. The German army used poison gas in Belgium in 1915. This created a huge need for many masks at once.

Cluny Macpherson made a canvas hood for the British Army. Edward Harrison and others later made the Large Box Respirator. In 1915, Nikolay Zelinsky invented an effective charcoal filter. People even collected coconut and peach stones to make charcoal.

These materials worked very well to catch gases.

Modern masks are much different than the old ones. In 1943, the British made a lighter plastic mask. It was more comfortable and fit the face better.

Today, masks must protect against many new threats. They are used by soldiers and people for civil defense. However, masks only protect your breathing. If a chemical touches your skin, you need full protective clothing too.
