Some helmets are used for ceremony or as symbols. For example, a policeman in the United Kingdom might wear one. These do not always have a protective function. However, most helmets are built for safety. They are used in many sports like cricket, baseball, and skiing. People also wear them for dangerous work. This includes jobs in mining, construction, or even military aviation.

Modern helmets work by using smart materials. Since the 1990s, most are made from plastic or resin. These materials are very light. They also have shock absorption. This means they help soak up the force of a hit. Many helmets use aramid fibers to stay strong. These include materials like Kevlar and Twaron.

Some race car helmets are even more advanced. They use a head and neck support system. This keeps the helmet attached to the body during a crash. This helps keep the person safe in severe collisions.

Helmets have changed a lot through history. In ancient times, the Corinthian and Roman galea were important. During the Middle Ages, most military helmets were made of metal. People used styles like the great helm or the armet.

In the 1800s, people used different materials. Some gamekeepers wore straw bound with bramble. Others used leather, felt, or pith. Pith comes from the center of plants. In the 20th century, the variety of helmets grew very fast. This was because of new plastics and many new sports.

Many famous helmets appeared during big wars. In World War I, the French used the Adrian helmet. The British used the Brodie helmet. The Germans used the Stahlhelm.

During World War II, many flight crews wore leather helmets. German pilots sometimes hid their leather helmets under a beret. In the modern era, the military uses special gear. This includes the American PASGT helmet, also called "Kevlar." They also use the Advanced Combat Helmet, or ACH. The French also made the SPECTRA helmet.

Helmets are now made for almost every activity. They are even used in special traditions. In the Catalan sport of castells, children wear them. These helmets have a soft outer surface. This protects the child and helps them not hurt others during a fall.
