Personal protective equipment

technology Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Personal protective equipment, or PPE, is a special kind of gear.

It includes items like helmets, goggles, and protective clothing. This gear works by creating a barrier. It sits between a person and a hazard. Hazards can be many things. They might be heat, chemicals, or tiny bits of dust in the air. PPE can also protect against electricity or germs. People use it for jobs and for sports too.

There is a specific way to use safety tools. Experts use a list called the hierarchy of controls. This list ranks ways to stay safe. The best way is to eliminate the danger. You can also substitute a dangerous thing with a safe one. Next, you can use engineering controls to design safer machines. You can also use administrative controls to teach safer habits. PPE is actually the last step on this list.

It is used when other ways do not work. However, PPE does not remove the hazard itself. If the gear fails, the person is still at risk.

People have used protective gear for a long time. Early gear included body armor, boots, and gloves. These helped stop physical injuries. In the sixteenth century, plague doctors wore special uniforms.

They wore long gowns, helmets, and gloves. Their masks had a beak shape. These were filled with flowers and herbs. People believed bad smells spread disease. In the 1910–11 Manchurian plague outbreak, Wu Lien-teh promoted cloth facemasks. This is seen as the start of modern scientific PPE.

There are many different types of PPE for different parts of the body. Respirators protect your breathing.

Some respirators filter out gases or particles. Others, like an SCBA, bring clean air from another source. Gloves protect your skin from chemicals or cuts.

You might use rubber gloves or heat-resistant ones. Eye protection is also very important.

Safety glasses stop debris from hitting your eyes. Goggles provide even more protection from splashes. Face shields can be worn over eyewear for extra safety.

Using the right gear can be a hard job. Some PPE can be uncomfortable or heavy. This might make it hard to do work. It can even make people want to stop wearing it. Good design helps make the gear easier to use. This is called ergonomic design. If the gear fits well, people stay safer.

Even a small gap can be a problem. For example, a gap between a glove and a coat can expose skin. Using the correct gear is the best way to stay healthy.
