Space suit

technology Maturity 9-11 Next article →

A space suit is a very special tool for protection. Outer space is a harsh place for humans to be. There is no air pressure in the vacuum of space. The temperature can be very hot or very cold.

Space suits help keep people safe from these dangers. They also protect against radiation and tiny space rocks. These suits make it possible for people to work outside a spacecraft.

These suits work in many different ways to keep an astronaut alive. First, they provide a stable internal pressure. This allows a person to breathe without their body being hurt by the vacuum.

Next, the suit must manage gases. It supplies fresh oxygen and removes carbon dioxide. The suit also helps with temperature regulation. Some suits use a Liquid Cooling and Ventilation Garment. This is a layer that touches the skin to move heat away.

People have been working on these suits for a long time. Inventors designed the first full-pressure suits in the 1930s. Later, humans finally wore them in space. In 1961, Yuri Gagarin wore the Soviet SK-1 suit. This was the first space suit worn by a human in space.

Since then, people have worn suits in Earth orbit and on the Moon.

There are three main types of suits used for different jobs. IVA suits are for use inside a pressurized spacecraft. They are light and comfortable to wear. IEVA suits work both inside and outside a spacecraft.

The most complex type is the EVA suit. These are used for spacewalks or exploring planets. They must protect against micrometeoroids that travel up to 27,000 kilometers per hour.

Space suits connect to things you might already know. For example, they use communication systems like a radio. Astronauts wear a cap with earphones and a microphone. Some of these were called "Snoopy caps" because of their look.

They also use systems to collect bodily waste. This helps the astronaut stay clean during long trips. Just like a heavy winter coat, the suit uses many layers to stay warm. The Apollo/Skylab A7L suit even had eleven layers in total.
