Vehicles use armour to stay safe from many different dangers. This protection helps people inside against bullets, rockets, shells, and missiles.

Many different machines use this, such as tanks, ships, and aircraft. Even some civilian cars use it to protect officials or reporters. Security firms also use armoured cars to carry money safely. This reduces the risk of robbery or hijacking during travel.

Spacecraft even use special armour to stop tiny space debris.

Armour works in many clever ways to stop a hit. Some metal plates are made very thick to block objects. Other designs use sloping or curved surfaces to help. A sloped surface makes a projectile hit at an angle. This means the object must travel through more material to get inside.

Sloping also helps to deflect the object away entirely. Some armour uses layers of different materials to work together. This is called composite armour, which uses two or more different substances.

In some types, a soft middle layer swells up when hit. This movement helps to disrupt the energy of the incoming threat.

People have been finding new ways to make armour for a long time. In 1940, the British Admiralty developed plastic metal for merchant ships. This was made of granite, limestone, and bitumen.

Early European warships used wrought iron backed by thick wood. Later, steel became much more common because it is much stronger. Modern tanks now use very advanced materials like ceramics and polymers. Scientists are even researching new things like nanomaterials and aluminium foam. These new ideas might help make armour that is not so heavy.

Different materials have very specific jobs based on their traits. Steel is a common choice because it is hard and tough. Aluminium is used when a vehicle needs to be very light. Titanium is also strong and light, which is great for planes.

Some tanks, like the M1A2 Abrams, use depleted uranium for extra strength. This heavy metal is sandwiched between steel plates in the front. Bullet-resistant glass is another important tool for protection. It often uses layers of glass and plastic to stop hits.

You can see how armour changes based on the vehicle's job. A large ship uses a thick belt of armour around its hull.

This belt protects the ship from shells or torpedoes. In a plane, armour is only used for the most vital parts. For example, the pilot in a Sukhoi Su-25 sits in a titanium enclosure. This is shaped like a bathtub to keep the pilot safe.

Tanks are the most heavily armoured vehicles on the ground today. They are built to survive many different kinds of weapons. This allows them to lead ground forces safely through difficult areas.
