A bulletproof vest is a special type of body armor. It is designed to protect a person's torso from harm. These vests work by absorbing the impact of a hit. They stop bullets and pieces of an explosion from going into the body.

Some vests are soft and flexible. Police officers and security guards often wear these to stop stabs or light shots. Other vests are hard and use metal or para-aramid materials. Soldiers usually wear hard armor to stop rifle bullets or sharp fragments. Some armor even uses ceramic inserts to stop very large, high-caliber rounds.

How these vests work depends on their design. Soft vests use many layers of fabric to catch a projectile. In the 1860s, people in Korea used ten layers of cotton to stop bullets. Hard armor works by using strong plates to block a hit. During the English Civil War, some soldiers used two layers of armor plating. The outer layer would absorb the energy from the bullet. Then, a thicker inner layer stopped the bullet from going through. This left the armor dented, but the person inside stayed safe.

People have tried to make body armor for hundreds of years. In 1538, a leader named Francesco Maria della Rovere asked for a special vest. In 1561, Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian II tested his armor against gunfire. Later, a doctor named George E. Goodfellow noticed silk could stop a bullet. He saw a silk handkerchief in a pocket stop a bullet in 1881. This led to the creation of silk vests at the end of the 19th century. These silk vests could cost $800 each in 1914.

During the World Wars, new types of armor were made for soldiers. In World War I, the Germans used steel plates called Sappenpanzer. This was also called "Lobster armor" because of how it looked. The British also made silk and cotton necklets to protect shoulders. In World War II, the United States made vests using a plastic called doron. These were used during the Battle of Okinawa in 1945. The Soviet Union also used the SN-42, which was a steel breastplate. These steel plates weighed about 3.5 kilograms to protect the torso and groin.

Body armor is a way to use science to keep people safe. It is similar to how a helmet protects your head during a bike ride. Just as a helmet takes the hit for you, a vest takes the hit for the body. Modern vests use very advanced fibers and strong plates to do this job. Whether it is soft cotton or hard steel, the goal is the same. These tools help people stay safe in very dangerous jobs.
