A cartridge is a handy, all-in-one package used in guns.

People often call a complete cartridge a "bullet," but that is not quite right. In science, a bullet is only the projectile, which is the part that flies out. A cartridge brings everything together in one small unit for easy handling. It holds the projectile, a propellant substance like powder, and an ignition device called a primer. All these parts sit inside a protective case made of metal, paper, or plastic. This case is made to fit perfectly inside the chamber of a gun.

This design keeps the powder safe from moisture and the elements.

To understand how it works, we can look at the steps that happen during a shot. First, the cartridge is placed into the chamber of the gun. When the trigger is pulled, a firing pin strikes the primer at the base. This impact creates a jet of sparks that travels into the case. These sparks ignite the propellant, which is the powder inside. The burning powder creates a huge amount of high-pressure gas very quickly. This pressure builds up until it pushes the projectile out of the case and down the barrel.

The gas then escapes from the muzzle in a loud blast.

Before cartridges were invented, loading a gun was a much harder job. People had to carry the projectile and the powder separately. They had to load them one by one through the muzzle of the gun. They also had to use a separate way to start the fire, like a slow match or a percussion cap. This process was very slow and clumsy. It made it difficult for shooters to fire quickly if they were in danger. The invention of the cartridge changed this by making everything ready to use in one piece.

There are many different types of cartridges used today. Some have a shape called a bottleneck, where the top part is narrower than the bottom. Others are straight-walled and look like a simple cylinder.

Cartridges can also be grouped by how long they are. For example, the .223 Remington is a "mini-action" cartridge because it is short. The .308 Winchester is a "short-action" cartridge. Larger ones, like the .30-06 Springfield, are called "long-action" cartridges. Even bigger ones, like the .375 Holland & Holland Magnum, belong to the "magnum-action" group.

Most cartridge cases are made of brass because it is very strong. Brass does not rust easily, which helps it stay in good shape. It is also easy to reshape, so some people can reuse the cases. Some military groups use steel cases because steel is cheaper to make. However, steel can rust more easily than brass.

Some shotgun shells even use plastic cases instead of metal. Whether they are made of brass, steel, or plastic, these cases are essential for making sure the gun works safely and reliably.
