Ammunition is the material used by weapons to hit a target.

It can be small like a bullet or huge like a bomb. This material is used to project force against a selected target. Most ammunition is designed to have a specific effect on that target. Some types are made to be lethal, while others serve different purposes. For example, smoke ammunition creates a fog to hide people from view.

Specialized rounds can even be made to pierce through thick armor.

A single round, or cartridge, works through a few important steps. First, a component called a propellant burns very quickly. This creates kinetic energy, which is the energy of motion. This force pushes the projectile out of the weapon toward the target.

Many rounds also use a fuze to control an explosion. A fuze is a device that acts as a detonator. It can be set to explode upon impact or after a certain amount of time. Some modern fuzes even use radar to explode in the air near a target.

The history of ammunition shows how much technology has changed. In the past, people used simple things like stones in a slingshot. Later, they used catapults to hurl objects at targets. Before the 20th century, black powder was the most common propellant used.

Today, most people use modern chemical compounds instead of black powder. These new compounds are much more reliable and efficient. As weapons became more refined, the need for specialized ammunition grew.

There are many different sizes and types of ammunition used today. A common standard for many weapons is the 5.56x45mm NATO round.

Large rounds fired from big cannons are called shells. These shells are often filled with high explosives to cause damage. Some ammunition is even designed to break into many small pieces. This is called an anti-personnel shell, and it affects a large area. Other items, like landmines, are designed to stay in one place.

You might see ammunition used in many different ways in the world. Soldiers often carry small arms ammunition in boxes or pouches.

On a much larger scale, warships have special storage areas called magazines. Even in nature, we see how energy moves things from one place to another. Just as a rocket uses fuel to move, ammunition uses propellant to fly. However, people must be very careful with old ammunition. Some items called duds fail to explode and can remain dangerous for many years.
