It is a tool used to release energy in a specific way. You can throw a grenade by hand, which makes it a hand grenade. Some types are launched from a rifle attachment. Other grenades are sent through a dedicated launcher. Most modern hand grenades are sized to fit an adult hand. They come in many shapes, such as spheres, cylinders, or ovals.

How does a grenade work?

First, a user removes a transport safety pin. When the grenade is thrown, an arming safety is released. This allows an internal striker to hit a primer. The primer then ignites a fuze, which is a delay element. This fuze burns down until it reaches a detonator. Finally, the detonator triggers the main explosive charge, known as the filler.

Grenades can do many different jobs. Fragmentation grenades use a hard outer casing to send out shards. These shards are often part of a pre-formed matrix made of wire or spheres. High-explosive grenades use shockwaves to do their work. Some grenades use chemical aerosols to create smoke or gas. Others are incendiary, meaning they use fire. Some anti-tank grenades even use a jet of metal.

In Song China, soldiers used gunpowder in ceramic or metal containers. These were called thunder crash bombs. By 1592, the Joseon Dynasty used a 10 kg cast iron grenade. It used a special launcher called a wangu. In 1433, Catalan troops used 200,000 copper pomegranates. These were early ancestors of the modern fragmentation grenade.

Later, during the Russo-Japanese War, Russian defenders made 18,000 grenades in a single month. Modern grenades became more practical after the First World War. A man named Nils Waltersen Aasen helped develop new designs in Norway. He even started a company to export them across Europe.
