Artillery refers to powerful weapons that launch munitions far away.

These tools are much stronger than standard infantry firearms. They can hit targets that are very far from the soldiers. Artillery can include many different types of equipment. This includes shell-firing guns, howitzers, and mortars. Some people also call these "barrel artillery." Other groups use rocket artillery to reach long distances.

How these weapons work depends on the type of energy used. Early versions relied on mechanical energy to function. This meant they needed huge machines to build up enough power. For example, a Roman catapult from the 1st century BC used stones.

Modern artillery uses much more energy than those old machines. A 20th-century US battleship could fire with massive energy levels. Today, many systems use high-explosive munitions to reach targets. These shells can create a blast or release small fragments. Some even use smoke to hide things from view.

History shows how these weapons have changed over many years. The first known catapult was made in Syracuse in 399 BC.

Later, the invention of gunpowder changed everything for soldiers. Early Chinese cannons often had a shape like a vase. By the 14th century, the Ming Dynasty used more advanced designs. These weapons moved from the Middle East into Europe by the 13th century.

Over time, metalwork improved to make even stronger guns.

Moving these heavy tools has always been a hard job. For a long time, horses pulled heavy gun carriages.

In the modern era, crews use wheeled or tracked vehicles. Some guns are even self-propelled, meaning they move on their own. These vehicles provide great mobility for an army. In the 20th century, new tools like radar helped find targets.

This helped artillery teams work more accurately from a distance.

Artillery is a major part of how many armies work today. Many different groups of soldiers work together as a crew. These teams are often called a "detachment" or a "battery."

In the past, artillery caused many deaths during famous wars. Joseph Stalin even called artillery "the god of war" in 1944. Today, these weapons can be used on land, at sea, or in the air. They connect to our modern world through advanced engineering and technology.
