A cannon is a large-caliber gun used as a type of heavy artillery.

These weapons are used to launch a projectile, which is an object shot through the air. To make this happen, cannons use an explosive propellant. This is a special kind of powder that creates energy when it burns. For a long time, people used black powder to make cannons work. Later, in the late 19th century, inventors created smokeless powder. Cannons come in many different shapes and sizes. They can be heavy or light, and they can shoot far or close.

How a cannon works is a step-by-step process of energy. First, the propellant is placed inside the tube of the gun. Next, a spark or flame is used to light the powder. The powder burns very quickly and creates a lot of gas. This gas expands and pushes against the projectile inside the barrel. Because the gas has nowhere else to go, it forces the object out of the front. This push is what sends the projectile flying toward its target.

History shows that cannons began to appear in China quite early. We see drawings of them from the 12th century. However, the first real pieces found by scientists date to the 13th century.

One very important piece is the Xanadu Gun from the year 1298. This is the earliest cannon that has a date written on it. In 1288, a commander named Li Ting used hand cannons in a battle. By the end of the 1300s, cannons were being used all across Eurasia.

In Europe, cannons changed how wars were fought. Around 1374, large cannons were recorded breaking through walls for the first time.

In 1464, people in the Ottoman Empire made the Great Turkish Bombard. This was a huge weapon used for sieges. After 1453, cannons became even more important as field artillery. This happened when cannons helped break the walls of the Roman Empire's capital. New tools like the limber helped make these heavy guns easier to move around.

Today, we do not use the word cannon as much as we used to. We often use words like guns, artillery, or howitzer instead.

We still use the name for very large automatic weapons called autocannons. You can think of a cannon like a giant version of a tube. The word itself comes from old languages that mean "reed" or "cane." Just like a hollow reed, a cannon is a tube that carries something through it.
