A howitzer is a special kind of artillery weapon. It sits right between a cannon and a mortar.

A cannon usually fires at a low angle to hit things directly. A mortar fires at a very high angle to drop things from above. A howitzer is unique because it can do both. It can fire at low angles or high angles. The split between these two ways of firing happens at 45 degrees.

This flexibility makes the howitzer a very useful tool in many different situations.

How a howitzer works depends on the angle of the barrel. If the barrel is aimed below 45 degrees, it uses low-angle fire. If the barrel is aimed between 45 and 90 degrees, it uses high-angle fire.

This allows the shell to follow a curved path. The shell can fly over tall walls or hills to hit a target on the other side. It can also drop straight down into deep trenches. Many howitzers use adjustable propellant charges to change how far the shell travels. This helps the crew hit targets with great accuracy.

The history of the howitzer goes back hundreds of years. The word comes from the Czech word "houfnice." This word originally meant a crowd or a throng. In the 1420s, the Hussites used short-barreled cannons to fire into crowds.

The first weapons we call howitzers appeared in the late 16th century. They were mostly used for siege warfare to break into strong forts. These early models could fire shells filled with gunpowder or fire. They were much more flexible than mortars, which had a fixed firing angle.

Over time, different types of howitzers were made for different jobs. In the 18th century, the Russian Empire used a type called a licorne. During the American Civil War, the famous Napoleon 12-pounder was used as a gun-howitzer.

By the early 20th century, scientists and soldiers made even bigger versions. Some were called super-heavy siege howitzers, like the famous Big Bertha. These were so huge that horses could not pull them. Instead, people had to use machines to move them to the battlefield. They even had to be put together at the place where they fired.

Today, howitzers are very different from the ones used long ago. In the past, there was a big difference between a gun and a howitzer. Now, many modern artillery pieces combine the best parts of both. Many howitzers are now self-propelled. This means they are built onto wheeled or tracked vehicles. They can move quickly across the land just like a tank. This makes them a very important part of modern military technology.
