Field guns are meant to move quickly with an army. This is different from guns kept in a fort. Some guns are for a siege. Siege guns are too large to move fast. They are only used for a long time.

Field guns work by firing at low angles. This is different from a howitzer. A howitzer fires at a high angle. Many guns have become mobile over time. Even huge siege weapons can move by rail now. In World War II, some guns did two jobs. They could hit tanks or support soldiers. This happened because they had a high muzzle velocity. That means the shell leaves the gun very fast.

History shows how these guns changed. Napoleon Bonaparte used very large wheels on his guns. This allowed him to move them during a battle. He could move guns from one point to another. This helped his army break up enemy groups. Later, many different countries made their own guns. The Soviet ZiS-3 was a very common field gun. More than 103,000 of these guns were made.

Many famous guns were used in big wars. The American 155 mm Long Tom was a famous one. It was built from a French weapon from World War I. The Soviet ZiS-3 could fire at distant targets. It could also fire directly at armored vehicles. In the 1960s, the U.S. Army used the M107 gun. This was a 175 mm gun for long ranges. It was used during the Vietnam War.

The M107 had some problems with cracked barrels. Because of this, the U.S. stopped using it. However, the Israeli military still uses it today. Modern armies use different tools now. Small mortars are used for close work. For long distances, people use rockets or missiles. Some modern guns like the L118 are still used. They help soldiers at ranges where mortars cannot reach.
