In the past, moving heavy artillery required special tools. A limber is a two-wheeled cart used to tow a gun. It supports the trail, which is the back end of the gun carriage.

When the gun is not being moved, the trail rests on the ground. To move it, the crew raises the trail and lowers it onto the limber. A metal hook called a pintle connects the two pieces. This setup allows horses to pull the heavy equipment easily.

Limbers and caissons work together to keep guns ready for use. A caisson is a second two-wheeled cart meant to carry ammunition.

The limber often holds an ammunition chest on top. This chest might hold 28 rounds for a Napoleon 12-pounder gun. To keep the gunpowder safe, the chest cover is made of copper. This prevents sparks from starting a fire.

A caisson carries even more supplies, like extra chests and spare wheels. It also carries a limber pole slung underneath.

History shows how these tools changed over time. The British developed a new carriage system that the French later adopted.

Americans then copied the French design for their own use. During the American Civil War, many armies used very similar equipment.

Field artillery limbers took on a standard look during this era. They featured two wheels, an ammunition chest, and a pintle hook. This design became the model for many years to come.

Moving these items was a very hard job for the crews. A full ammunition chest for a Napoleon gun weighs 650 pounds.

Because they are so heavy, crews must drag or push them. They cannot simply lift them into place. Six horses were usually the best team for a field piece.

Sometimes, a crew might need ten horses to pull a huge siege gun. This extra strength helps move the massive weight across the ground.

Today, we see these tools in different ways. Most armies now use trucks or tractors instead of horses.

However, caissons are still used in special military funerals. In the United States, they carry caskets at Arlington National Cemetery.

This is a way to show great respect for those who served. Even though technology has changed, these traditions remain important.
