A powder keg is a barrel used to hold gunpowder.

For a long time, these were very important. They were the main way to store and move black powder. This way of doing things lasted until the 1870s. After that, people started using modern cased cartridges instead. Today, these old barrels are often kept as collectibles. They show us how people used to handle dangerous materials.

These barrels had to be handled with great care. A single spark or any heat could cause trouble. This heat could make the powder deflagrate. Deflagration is when the powder burns very quickly.

To stay safe, people often used small casks. Small sizes helped limit damage if an explosion happened. Some kegs were much larger than others. For example, kegs for mining or quarrying were often quite big. These were used for blasting powder in those jobs.

Early American kegs had a special way of being built. They did not always use metal bands to hold the wood together. Instead, they used strappings made of reed or sapling wood. This was a smart choice for safety. Metal bands could create sparks that might start a fire. Using wood or reeds helped keep the powder safe from heat. This shows how much people thought about safety back then.

Sometimes, people use the term powder keg as a metaphor. A metaphor uses one thing to describe another. A powder keg can describe a specific region or place. This place might seem peaceful and dormant for a long time. However, many difficult circumstances might be building up underneath. One single event can trigger a large outburst of violence. This term helps people understand complex problems in a simple way.

History often uses this metaphor to talk about Europe.

The term is often used for the Balkans. This region was involved in the Balkan Wars and World War I. One famous event happened in Sarajevo in 1914. This was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. This event was the immediate trigger for World War I. It showed how one event can change everything.
