A barrel is a hollow, cylindrical container with a bulging center.

It is usually longer than it is wide. Many barrels are made of wooden strips called staves. These staves are held together by hoops made of wood or metal.

A person who builds these wooden containers is called a cooper. While wood is traditional, modern barrels can be made of aluminum, stainless steel, or plastic. People use them to store many different things. They can hold liquids like water, oil, or alcohol. In the past, they even held gunpowder, meat, fish, and nails.

Barrels help change the flavor of many drinks through a process called aging. When a liquid sits in a wooden barrel, it can take on new tastes. The wood can add things like vanillin or tannins to the drink.

This happens because the wood is slightly porous. This means it has tiny holes that let a little air in. As air enters, some liquid evaporates into the air. This loss is called the "angels' share."

To keep the drink from changing too much, people often top it up from other barrels. Some drinks, like sherry, are kept partially empty to let a special layer grow on top.

People have used barrels for thousands of years. An Egyptian wall-painting from 2600 BC shows a wooden tub used to measure wheat.

Another painting from 1900 BC shows a cooper working during a grape harvest. The Roman historian Pliny the Elder wrote about barrel makers in Europe. He said they lived in Alpine villages.

Roman coopers were often independent tradesmen. They would teach their skills to their sons. Even in ancient times, barrels were used for many jobs. Julius Caesar used burning barrels to start fires during battles. The Romans also used empty barrels to build bridges across rivers.

Different types of wood make different flavors. Many wine and spirit barrels are made from oak.

Some makers use English oak or American white oak.

American oak often gives stronger aromas than French oak. In Japan, sake makers use Japanese cedar for a minty flavor.

Laws also use the word barrel to talk about specific amounts. In the UK, a barrel of beer is a set measurement. In the US, a barrel of oil is a specific volume. Even though we do not ship oil in barrels anymore, we still use the name for the amount.

Today, barrels are still very important for many famous drinks. In the United States, law says "straight whiskey" must stay in new, charred oak barrels for at least two years.

Some tequila, like Añejo, is aged in oak for up to three years. Even condiments like Tabasco sauce use barrels. Whether it is a tiny keg or a huge vat, the barrel is a clever tool for storage and flavor.
