A crate is a large and strong shipping container.

People use them to move or store very heavy items. Most crates are made of wood, but some are made of plastic or metal. Metal is not used very often because it is quite heavy. When metal is used, the container might be called a cage.

Crates are very important for moving goods safely across the world. They help protect things from bumping or shaking during a long trip.

There are a few different ways to build a crate. A closed crate is almost completely covered with boards or plywood.

An open crate has gaps between the boards to let air in. A frame crate is just a skeletal structure with no outer surface.

To make a crate even stronger, builders add extra pieces of wood. These are called cleats, and they provide support to the panels. If a plywood side is very large, builders use battens to cover the seams.

These extra parts help the crate stay strong while it is being moved.

Learning how to build good crates took a long time. Before 1910, people often moved heavy items like sinks without any packaging.

This caused many items to chip or break during shipping. Some people thought heavy crates would help, but workers actually handled them more roughly. The best solution was to use open crates for these heavy goods. This allowed workers to see the items and be more careful.

It also let customers check their items right when they arrived.

Many experts have studied how to make the best crates. In 1930, C. A. Plaskett wrote a handbook about packaging for the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Later, in 1964, the USDA Forest Service released the Wood Crate Design Manual. This manual is known as Handbook 252. Scientists also use special rules for crates moving overseas. They use a "bug stamp" to show the wood was treated.

This helps stop insects and diseases from traveling to new places.
