A crate is a large, robust shipping container designed for the transport or storage of heavy items.

While they can be made of plastic or metal, the term most often implies a wooden construction. Metal is rarely chosen because its high weight adds difficulty to shipping. When metal is used, the container is often an open structure called a cage.

Crates are vital in global logistics to protect goods from mechanical stresses. These stresses include compression, vibration, and impact during transit.

There is a technical distinction between a wooden crate and a wooden box. A wooden box's strength is rated based on the weight it can carry before the sides and top are attached. In contrast, a crate's strength is rated only once the top is in place.

Construction styles often overlap, but the edges define the type. If you remove the outer sheathing and a framed structure remains standing, it is a crate. If removing the material leaves no way to fasten the lumber, it is a box. A crate typically features a self-supporting structure with all six sides installed to reach its rated strength.

Engineers categorize wooden crates into three main designs: closed, open, and framed. A closed crate is almost entirely enclosed with lumber or plywood.

When using lumber, builders often leave gaps between boards to allow for natural expansion. An open crate uses lumber for sheathing but leaves larger gaps between the boards. If these gaps are wider than the width of the boards, the container is considered unsheathed. An unsheathed crate is known as a frame crate.

A frame crate consists only of a skeletal structure without surface protection.

To increase durability, builders add specific components like cleats and battens. A cleat is a piece of lumber used to support a panel that has reached a certain size.

Cleats might be placed between edges or evenly spaced to strengthen a panel. Sometimes, two cleats are added across a top panel to support lifting chains or straps. If a side requires multiple pieces of plywood, builders use battens to cover the seams.

Battens are typically wider than cleats and provide essential support to the abutting pieces of plywood.

Historically, the evolution of crating solved major economic problems. Before 1910, heavy items like enameled cast iron sinks were often shipped without any packaging. This lack of protection led to nearly 20% losses due to enamel chipping.

Early attempts to use heavy crates actually increased losses because workers handled them more roughly. The solution was to use open crates, which made shipments lighter and allowed workers to see the fragile merchandise. This also allowed customers to inspect their purchases immediately upon arrival.

Scientific study of packaging has grown significantly over the last century. In 1930, C. A. Plaskett wrote a handbook for the U.S. Department of Agriculture regarding transport packaging.

The USDA Forest Service later expanded this work into the 1964 "Wood Crate Design Manual," known as Handbook 252. Today, international shipping requires strict adherence to ISPM 15 standards. This involves a "bug stamp" to prove the wood was treated. Such treatment prevents the spread of insects and diseases across borders.

Crates serve many specialized industries, from agriculture to aerospace. In food distribution, crates move items like bananas or potatoes.

Finally, many industries use reusable plastic crates for milk or soft drinks.
