A bottle is a container used to store and move liquids.

It must be made of a material that does not let liquid leak through. Common materials include glass, pottery, porcelain, plastic, or aluminium. Most bottles have a narrow neck at the top. This part is called the mouth. You can seal the mouth with a stopper inside the bottle. You might also use an external cap or a special seal.

These simple tools help us keep many different liquids safe.

Glass bottles changed how people store wine. When used with a high-quality stopper like a cork, they allow wine to age for a long time. In the past, merchants sold wine from large barrels. This was hard because people could change the wine or add things to it. This was called fraud or adulteration. To fix this, many places started "château bottling." This means the wine is put into bottles at the place where it is made. Since 1974, all port wine must be bottled this way.

Different shapes help bottles do different jobs. A Bordeaux bottle has straight sides and a curved shoulder. This shoulder helps catch sediment, which are tiny solid bits in the wine. A Burgundy bottle has sides that taper down to a short cylindrical section. It does not have a shoulder. A Champagne bottle is built very differently. It has a wider base and a heavy construction. This helps it stay strong against the pressure from carbonation. Carbonation is the gas that makes a drink bubbly.

In 1872, a man named Hiram Codd designed a special bottle.

He lived in Camberwell, London, and patented his design for bubbly drinks. The Codd-neck bottle uses a marble and a rubber washer to stay sealed. The bottles are filled upside down. The gas pressure inside the bottle pushes the marble against the rubber washer. This keeps the bubbles from escaping. The neck is pinched into a special shape. This creates a space for the marble so it does not block the drink. These bottles are now rare collector items in the UK.

Today, we use many other kinds of bottles every day. Plastic bottles are very common for water, milk, and medicine. They are much lighter than glass and do not break easily. However, plastic bottles can cause widespread pollution. Some people also use aluminium bottles, which are sometimes called "bottlecans." There are even hot water bottles made of rubber to provide warmth. These different materials and shapes allow us to carry almost any liquid we need.
