A water bottle is a container used to hold liquids. Most people use them to carry water while they travel. They help you stay hydrated when you are away from a water supply.

You can find bottles made of plastic, glass, or metal. In the past, people used wood, bark, or animal skins like leather. Today, bottles are often either disposable or reusable.

Disposable bottles are meant to be used once and then thrown away. Reusable bottles can be used many times to help reduce plastic waste.

Different materials make bottles work in different ways. Plastic bottles can be very hard or very soft. Some use a material called LDPE, which is highly flexible for squeeze bottles.

Metal bottles are often made of stainless steel or aluminium. Some metal bottles have two walls with a vacuum between them. This is called insulation, and it keeps drinks hot or cold. Glass bottles are also used because they do not change the taste of water.

However, glass is heavy and can break easily if it is dropped.

Some special bottles use science to clean your water. Carbon filtering bottles use activated charcoal to improve taste and remove some chemicals.

Other bottles use UV light to kill tiny germs called pathogens. This is very helpful when traveling to places where water quality is poor. There are even hydration reservoirs for hikers. These are large, flexible bags that fit inside a backpack. You drink from them using a small sipping tube.

Mexico also uses a lot of bottled water for health reasons. In 2010, Mexico saw an 8 percent yearly increase in bottled water purchases. Mexican citizens drink about 61.8 gallons of bottled water each year. This is more than twice the amount people in the US drink. In 2007, Americans used 50 billion single-use plastic bottles.

Choosing a bottle can affect the planet and your health. Making plastic bottles requires petroleum, which is a natural resource.

Using reusable bottles helps keep plastic out of the waste stream. Some plastic bottles can also leak chemicals into water if they get too hot. Researchers at Arizona State University found that temperatures above 60 °C can cause antimony to enter the water. This can happen if you leave a plastic bottle in a car during summer. Using glass or metal is often the best way to help the environment.
