Mexican citizens drink about 61.8 gallons of bottled water each year. This is more than twice the amount people in the US drink. In 2007, Americans used 50 billion single-use plastic bottles.

Choosing a bottle can affect the planet and your health. Making plastic bottles requires petroleum, which is a natural resource.

They are generally categorized as either disposable or reusable. Disposable bottles are often sold pre-filled, while reusable bottles are usually sold empty.

Plastic bottles vary significantly based on the specific polymer used in their manufacture. Single-use bottles are frequently made from polyethylene terephthalate, also known as PETE. Reusable plastic bottles offer different levels of durability and flexibility. For example, high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and polypropylene provide more rigidity. In contrast, low-density polyethylene (LDPE) is highly flexible and is often used for collapsible squeeze bottles.

Many modern reusable plastics are designed to be BPA-free, meaning they do not contain bisphenol A. This makes them dishwasher-safe and more durable for long-term use.
