You can drink it as a liquid or use it to prepare food. Many people get this water through taps in their homes. This is often called tap water.

The amount of water a person needs depends on many things. It changes based on age and how much someone exercises. Environmental conditions like hot weather also matter. People working in hot climates might need a whole day's worth of water.

One common way to move water is through pipes. This is very efficient, but building these systems costs a lot of money. In some cities, half of the water leaks out of old pipes.

Scientists study water quality using three main categories. These are microbiological, chemical, and physical.

Microbiological testing looks for tiny germs like bacteria, viruses, and parasites. These can cause immediate sickness. Chemical testing looks for things like heavy metals or pesticides. These can cause health problems over a long time. Physical testing looks at things like taste and how clear the water is.

History shows us why clean water is so important. In 1854, a man named John Snow found a cholera outbreak in London. He discovered it came from a single water pump on Broad Street.

This helped start the science of epidemiology, which is the study of how diseases spread. There have been many other water problems in history. In 2000, seven people died from an E. coli outbreak in Walkwalk, Ontario. In 2014, the city of Flint, Michigan, had a crisis with lead in the water.

This is a big challenge for developing countries. Some water has natural chemicals that can be harmful. For example, too much fluoride from rocks can cause bone deformities in children. Arsenic in groundwater is also a threat to many people.
