Diarrhea is a condition where a person has three or more loose or watery bowel movements in a single day.

It can be a short-term problem or last for more than two weeks. This condition matters because it can lead to dehydration, which is when the body loses too much fluid. Dehydration can cause skin to lose its stretchiness or make a person feel very irritable. In serious cases, it can lead to a fast heart rate or less responsiveness.

Keeping the body hydrated is a very important part of staying healthy.

To understand how it works, we must look at the large intestine.

Usually, the large intestine soaks up water from waste before it leaves the body. This process helps keep the body's fluids in balance. Diarrhea happens when the intestine cannot soak up enough water. This might happen because of a virus, a bacterium, or a parasite. Sometimes, things like too much sugar or salt can pull water into the bowels. This is called osmotic diarrhea. Other times, the lining of the gut is damaged, which is called inflammatory diarrhea.

Many different things can cause these changes in the body. Infections are a very common cause and are often called gastroenteritis.

These germs can come from contaminated food or water. Viruses like rotavirus are a common cause for children under five years old. For adults, a virus called norovirus is a very common cause. Some people also get diarrhea from things that are not infections. This includes things like lactose intolerance or celiac disease. These conditions change how the body handles certain foods.

Diarrhea affects many people around the world every single year.

Scientists estimate that between 1.7 and 5 billion cases occur each year. In 2012, it was the second most common cause of death for children under five. In 2019, there were an estimated 1.53 million deaths from diarrhea. This number is lower than the 2.9 million deaths recorded in 1990. Many of these cases happen in developing countries where young children get sick often. This can lead to long-term problems like stunted growth.

One of the best ways to treat it is with oral rehydration solution. This is clean water mixed with small amounts of salt and sugar. Zinc tablets are also a helpful treatment for many people. To prevent getting sick, people should wash their hands with soap. Using clean drinking water and good sanitation is also very important. These simple steps have saved about 50 million children in the last 25 years.
