life science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Norovirus is a tiny germ that causes a sickness called gastroenteritis. This means your stomach and intestines feel very upset. Many people call it the "winter vomiting disease" because it is more common during the cold months. It is a very common cause of stomach illness all over the world. In the United States, it causes about half of all foodborne disease outbreaks. Every year, there are about 685 million cases and 200,000 deaths globally.

When you catch the virus, it starts working inside your small intestine. This happens through a way called the fecal-oral route. This means the virus moves from waste into a person's mouth. It can spread through contaminated food, like shellfish or salads, or through dirty water. Sometimes, the virus can even travel through the air near vomit.

If you breathe in these tiny particles, you can get sick too. The virus can stay in a person even after they feel better.

Scientists first learned a lot about this virus after a big outbreak in 1968. It happened in a city called Norwalk, Ohio. Because of that event, the virus is often called the Norwalk virus. Researchers have since found many different types of these viruses. They belong to a family called Caliciviridae. Most human infections come from two main groups called genogroups GI and GII.
