Hepatitis C

life science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Hepatitis C is a disease caused by a tiny virus. This virus mostly attacks the liver, which is a very important organ in your body.

Some people feel sick right away when they first get it. They might have a fever or feel very tired. Other signs include belly pain or dark colored urine. Many people feel no symptoms at all during the start. This makes the virus hard to notice early on.

When the virus stays in the body for a long time, it is called a chronic infection. About 70% of people who catch the virus will have this chronic type. At first, a person might feel fine for many years. However, the virus can slowly damage the liver over time. This damage can lead to cirrhosis, which is serious scarring of the liver. In some cases, it can even cause liver cancer.

Scientists have worked hard to understand this virus for a long time. People first suggested it existed back in the 1970s. It was not proven to be a real virus until 1989.

The virus can only infect humans and chimpanzees. Doctors use blood tests to find it in a person. They look for specific markers called antibodies or for the viral RNA. RNA is a part of the virus itself.

Most people get the virus through blood-to-blood contact. This can happen from using needles or through medical tools that are not clean. It can also spread from a mother to her baby during birth.

You cannot get it from hugging, kissing, or sharing a drink. In 2019, about 58 million people were infected worldwide. Around 290,000 people died from the virus that same year. This mostly happened because of liver cancer or cirrhosis.

There is no vaccine to stop the virus from spreading. But there is very good news about how we treat it now. Older medicines like ribavirin were not always very successful. They also caused many side effects for the patients. Today, newer medicines like sofosbuvir can cure over 95% of people.

These new treatments are much better and easier to use. In many places, the cost of these medicines has dropped a lot. This helps more people around the world get the help they need.
