Rubella is a sickness caused by a tiny germ called a virus.

People often call it German measles or three-day measles. For many people, the sickness is very mild. In fact, half of the people who catch it do not even know they are sick. The name rubella comes from a Latin word meaning "little red." This describes the pink or light red rash that many people get.

This disease is important to study because it can be very serious for some.

The virus usually spreads through the air when an infected person coughs.

Once a person catches it, they can spread the virus to others. They are contagious for one week before the rash appears. They are also contagious for about one week after the rash shows up. The virus travels through the body and can be found in the blood. It can also be found in a person's throat or urine. Doctors can use tests to see if someone has the virus or has immunity.

Doctors first noticed this disease a long time ago. A German doctor named Friedrich Hoffmann described it in 1740. Later, in 1814, George de Maton said it was its own special disease. He said it was different from scarlet fever and regular measles. This is why people sometimes call it German measles. Because it was first studied by German doctors, it was also called Rötheln in Germany. Learning about these early doctors helps us see how we understood the germ.

Rubella can be very dangerous for babies during pregnancy. If a mother gets the virus, it can pass to the baby. This can cause a serious condition called congenital rubella syndrome, or CRS.

About 100,000 cases of CRS happen every year around the world. Babies with CRS might have problems with their eyes, like cataracts. They might also have trouble hearing or have heart problems. These issues are most common if the mother is infected during her first three months of pregnancy.

We can prevent rubella using a vaccine. A single dose of the vaccine is more than 95% effective. Many people get it as part of the MMR vaccine. This shot protects against measles, mumps, and rubella all at once. Vaccination has helped many places get rid of the virus. For example, the World Health Organization said the Americas were free of rubella in 2015. Australia was also declared rubella-free in October 2018. Vaccines are a powerful way to keep people healthy.
