Some people call it German measles. It is often a mild sickness. Half of the people who get it do not even know.

Most people see a pink or light red rash. This rash starts on the face. Then it spreads to the rest of the body. It may last for three days. The rash can be itchy. Other signs include a fever or a sore throat. Adults may also feel pain in their joints.

Rubella spreads through the air. You can catch it from a cough.

It is very dangerous for pregnant women. The virus can pass to a baby. This can cause congenital rubella syndrome, or CRS. Children with CRS may have problems with their eyes, ears, or heart.

We can prevent rubella with a vaccine. A single shot is more than 95% effective. It is often part of the MMR vaccine. This shot protects against measles, mumps, and rubella. Vaccination has helped many places become free of the disease.
